No one can successfully kill Sherlock.
Not even Sherlock.

Q: Why hasn’t Regina used Belle to bargain with Rumpelstiltskin?

Edward Kitsis: That is an interesting thing because if you’re going to enter into a negotiation like that, you need to have extreme leverage, because if you came to him, like, in the last episode, and said, “I’ll give you something that YOU want if you do this, I have Belle locked up,” and I’m Mr.Gold, I would probably just choke you and then go release her. So I’d say that for Regina to unveil that information has to be done in a way that won’t lead to her death. Because once he finds out what she’s done, God help us all.

I really hope we get to see Gold’s reaction towards Regina next season. I was a little disappointed that he didn’t get angry when he heard about Regina locking Belle up, but then I realized it was because, initially, he was just so happy she was alive that he didn’t have time to get angry. Then he was on his way to unleash magic into our world anyway, so he probably figured he could get his revenge later.

Still, that reply makes me happy because, as much as I like/feel bad for Regina, she deserves some serious payback for this one.

  • Rumpelstiltskin: Hey, you just met me.
  • Rumpelstiltskin: And this is crazy.
  • Rumpelstiltskin: But I thought you were dead for over thirty years and I missed you a lot and I'm going to murder Regina for this, that lying bitch, so just hold still while I hug you and please don't mace me.
  • Rumpelstiltskin: So love me, maybe?

Okay, so obviously I have some Rumbelle thoughts from Sunday’s epic season finale of “Once Upon a Time” (yes, I feel the use of epic is actually appropriate here).
As should be obvious, spoilers follow from here on in!
Also, this is probably going to be more than a bit rambly, so consider yourselves warned.
I was surprised and pleased (thanks to Cyprith mostly) that Jefferson freed Belle in order to get his revenge on Regina. A very fitting move for Jefferson himself. Plus, I agree they’d make interesting bros. And if Regina had actually used Belle as her trump card against Rumpelstiltskin, it would have bothered me in a couple of different ways - firstly, it would have shifted the power struggle between Rumple and Regina waaaaaay too much for my liking (he’d be beholden to her, wouldn’t he?) and it would have made Belle a tool in that power struggle, which would have weakened her a bit as a character. They’re at their best, I think, when all they have to worry about are their own issues, not the issues someone else piles on top of those.
That said, I was a bit disappointed at first over how sidelined and rushed their reunion seemed to be. However, after thinking it over and another rewatch of “Skin Deep” followed immediately by a rewatch of the finale the way it went down does make more sense to me.
The first moment of their reunion, when Belle arrives in Gold’s shop, was perfect. That’s exactly how I imagined it happening, give or take a few details. Robert Carlyle is just amazing (so is Emilie, of course, but damn). His disbelief, the way he reached out and gripped her shoulder to test her realness, then clinging to her when she said she was told he’d protect her ….*fangirl swoon* <3
But of course, he has a lot more going on than their romance. She’s very important to him - he’s even gotten to the point that he’s able to acknowledge her as his True Love (we saw that in how he described her to Charming) - but what’s going on now with the whole plot, the Curse breaking, this is the moment he’s been planning for for years. Its also been theorized by some people here (sorry, not sure exactly who) that he NEEDS the magic to find his son. So, this is still very huge for him, he can’t focus on his happy ending just yet, because he hasn’t accomplished what he came to our world to do. So, just like before, time wasn’t exactly on the side of Rumbelle perfection.
As for the second moment, as the curse was lifted and Belle remembered him for real -I believe, based on what we saw of her in “Dreamy,” that she was on her way back to the Dark Castle when the Queen abducted her. What she said about love as hope and being with the one you love, that makes me think that there’s a good chance she left the tavern and decided to go back to her own love and try again. Also, she was just released from over 28 years of imprisonment which she probably doesn’t have a logical reason for, then remembered the whole truth very shortly afterward. With all of that in mind,  I imagine that what happened before - how he treated her, the bad decisions he made, the decisions she made - didn’t matter as much anymore. They were finally together again after all of that, and its not like life has been that certain and stable in her experience. She had to tell him, just in case they were torn apart again.
The look on her face in the picture above, just after she says “I love you,” kinda cements that for me. Kind of an “oh, fuck it, here’s the truth” kind of moment.
Then his reaction, embracing her again and holding her very tightly, and the relief and certainty in his voice as he repeats the word “yes” and tells her he loves her too…..he definitely sold it for me. This is a man who thought he’d never see this woman again, who clearly spent the time after she a) left and b) “died” coming to terms with what happened: the fact that they really were in love and he lost her. No, we didn’t get to see him finally come to understand that, but we see the results now. So she tells him she loves him and they embrace, he holds her tight again, and tells her with that certainty that he loves her too.
It may not have been the amazing, dramatic moment we all were hoping for. But that’s why there’s fanvideos like this one.
As for the lack of kissing, I think it makes a lot of sense that she didn’t kiss him - I mean, look what happened last time. If she wants to be with him again, she’d likely leave that move up to him, just in case. Not to excuse his earlier behavior in ANY way - obviously his choice was crap, and she called him out on that before. But the situation is obviously a lot more complicated now. As for him, in acknowledging her as his True Love, he acknowledges that she can break his curse (duh). With him planning to bring magic back, he might think he shouldn’t risk it yet just in case he needs his power as the Dark One in order to find Baelfire. He may have planned all of this, but he’s a smart man - he should know that he can’t be sure how the magic is going to settle back on/into anyone.
Or we could go with the theory that there are too many Feels and if they’d kissed then, he’d have lost focus on everything else and he would have missed his chance to bring magic back because they were too busy shagging in the woods.
*ahem*
So no, it wasn’t exactly ideal. But they’ve never exactly had the perfect kind of romance, or the perfect kind of beginning. We, the fans, have that with the love story between Snow and Charming. They have that cheesy, full of cliches, tear-each-other’s-clothes-off-in-the-middle-of-the-street-no-matter-who’s-watching kind of love. Rumple and Belle don’t have that, at least not in that way. Their love story has always been a bit more realistic - they had time to get to know each other, they hurt each other, they have to fight even harder for what they have, for what they could be together.
That’s part of what makes me love them so much.
I do expect her to be upset with him and confused, but also to be able to forgive him once she realizes he’s doing this to find his child. And I trust Jane Espenson to give us some adorableness (and angst) for them in Season 2.
Like Rumple himself said, “There’ll be time for all of that. There’ll be time for everything.”
